About the Translator

Filipa Riscado is a Portuguese citizen, born, raised, and educated in Portugal. She has two degrees, one in Marketing (Public Relations) and a second in Translation. She holds a BEC Higher certificate (in advanced business and financial English) from the University of Cambridge and also a certificate in Advanced Spanish from the Cervantes Institute.

She began her professional career in 2002, working for large Portuguese construction companies in executive support roles (directors, directors, and public tenders). She later established a small online company focused on virtual (remote) secretarial and telephone services.

Since 2017, she has been working full-time as a freelance translator, translating documents in the fields of Law, Business and Finance, and Medicine and Pharmacy. The translation of official documents for migration and legalization purposes is also part of her areas of expertise.

Working languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese from Portugal (native).

Advanced user of MS Word.

My approach to work:

  • I always print out the documents. That way, I can check the sentences in context in the document, page by page, which is something troublesome when working with translation software.

  • For large, time-consuming projects, I always calculate the number of words I have to translate per day. That way, I know I will meet the deadline.

  • When I receive PDF documents to translate (most of the time), I prepare a virtually identical file in Word, with the same source text on each page, including the text in stamps and images.

  • I am a proficient user of MS Word. When preparing and handling Word files, I always take into account:

→ Files that are optimized for translation software and computer reading

→ Readability for the end user/entity

→ Final presentation/layout

  • I am thorough with the sources I use. I always seek reliable sources, such as monolingual dictionaries and specialized glossaries, websites of companies and/or public bodies with similar activities to the topic I am working on, the client's website, publications by professional associations, theses, parallel documents, national and European legislation, etc.

  • I avoid making mistakes and using misused phrases in my translations as much as possible. I always try to clarify my doubts about grammar, syntactic construction, and verb conjugation by consulting websites managed by experts, Portuguese teachers, or Portuguese language dictionaries.
